Tooth structure can be replaced by materials that are constructed
outside the mouth. These are called ‘indirect restorations’. The
advantage of indirect restorations is the greater strength and better reconstruction
of the shape of the tooth. Disadvantages can be the need to cut away healthy
tooth structure to allow insertion of the restoration. This can be
avoided with direct restorations.
We will be happy to discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages for
your particular situation.
Inlays and onlays can be made of gold alloy, hybrid composite or ceramic materials. Inlays fit inside the tooth and onlays fit over the tooth to cover some, or all of the cusps.
