Tooth structure can be replaced by materials that are constructed
outside the mouth. These are called ‘indirect restorations’. The
advantage of indirect restorations is the greater strength and better reconstruction
of the shape of the tooth. Disadvantages can be the need to cut away healthy
tooth structure to allow insertion of the restoration. This can be
avoided with direct restorations.
We will be happy to discuss with you the advantages and disadvantages for
your particular situation.
Crowns
Often referred to as ‘caps’, crowns are indirect restorations that cover the whole surface of the tooth. They can be made of gold alloy, ceramic or ceramic bonded to metal alloy. They can be secured onto the tooth by cementation or direct bonding techniques. The procedures for preparing the tooth and the longevity of the restorations are different for the different materials and techniques. We are happy to advise you on the advantages and disadvantages for your individual needs.
Bridges
Bridges are used to replace missing teeth. They are cemented or bonded
to an adjacent supporting tooth or teeth by metal flanges or crown, onlay
or inlay type restorations.
