Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth or ‘third molars’ normally erupt behind the second molars between the ages of 18 to 25 years.

Not everyone has all four wisdom teeth and not all wisdom teeth erupt. They can be uncomfortable as they erupt and this is generally due to bacteria creeping under the gum flap which partially covers the tooth.

Brush well (an interspace brush can be helpful dipped in a chlorohexidine based mouthwash) and use hot saline mouthwashes until settled.

If the tooth does not settle after a few days and the gum is swollen, we can help you by cleaning the gum flap under local anaesthetic. Antibiotics may be required for severe situations.

Occasionally, wisdom teeth can cause persistent problems, in which case they may need to be removed.
