The bacteria that like to rot your teeth thrive on frequent sugar intake. So it is the between-meal snacks and drinks that do the most damage. Try and have sugary treats as a ‘pudding’ at meal times. Here are some tooth friendly ideas for between-meal snacks and drinks.
Something to drink:
Water, milk, tea and coffee without sugar.
Something to snack on:
Sandwiches: cheese, ham or tuna.
Breads and crackers: toast, crumpets or muffins with butter, marmite,
peanut butter (sugar free remember), cheese spread or any spread you like
that doesn’t have sugar in.
Crackers, plain crisps, crispbreads, bread sticks.
Cheese: cheddar, edam etc.
Cereals: Rice Crispies, Cornflakes, Weetabix with milk and without sugar.
Vegetables: chunky pieces of cucumber, carrot or celery.
Fresh fruit: apples, bananas, pears, melon, oranges, strawberries, raspberries
etc.
Or you could try plain popcorn or peanuts as
snacks.
But what about sweets and biscuits?
You can still have sweets and biscuits but have them with your lunch or
with your dinner as a pudding.
What about fruit juice and squashes?
Enjoy fruit juices, squashes, smoothies and the occasional fizzy drink at
mealtimes too.
Remember dried fruit like apricots and raisins have concentrated sugar in them and get stuck in your teeth. Best to have these at mealtimes.
